Porcelain for iPod cover

Designed this for an iPod cover competition / contest. I used to do this kind of stuff when I was in school – painted many pots n dishes with similar patterns – took me five days to complete a sheet of A4 this time round!

This is the completed sheet.

the aside Desk

I work in varied settings – when in Bombay I usually work in my spacious living room, sitting on two mattresses rolled together with my laptop in front on a carpenter’s stool. But when at my parent’s place in Gurgaon, it’s invariably the bed – the Walnut carved study-table’s occupied with Dad’s laptop and other stuff and he spends a lot of time on Google Earth planning the next vacation with Mom. The balcony is usually either too hot or too cold to allow long periods of work and my study table is still being worked on at the carpenter’s workshop. So this is what my current workspace looks like right this minute! [ Click on it for a larger picture. ]

A personal project. Illustration based on a dream. The above is the sketch on paper with a paper texture applied on top of the illustration in Photoshop. Below is the illustration converted to a vector in Illustrator, color added. The last the end of the post is the colored Illustrator file further edited in Photoshop.

A logo doesn’t sell, it identifies…

Perfect summary by Paul Rand for what I’ve been discussing with some recent clients and on the LinkedIn Graphic Design Question & Answers.

Note : the above sketch is not trying to misinterpret the Enron logo, the logo remains the property of Enron – the above is just an illustration.

A logo doesn’t sell, it identifies…A logo derives its meaning from the quality of the thing it symbolizes, not the other way around. A logo is less important than the product it signifies; what it means is more important than what it looks like.” And for those seeking Riefenstahl parallels, Rand adds, “Design is a two-faced monster. One of the most benign symbols, the swastika, lost its place in the pantheon of the civilized when it was linked to evil, but its intrinsic quality remains indisputable. This explains the tenacity of good design.

Picked it up from Design Observer where there’s a really nice piece on Enron’s logo – the ‘crooked E‘ designed by Rand.
