I’m designing the packaging design for a Gold series of incense sticks for a New Delhi based incense-stick manufacturer. To kick-off the project, we decided to start with the line of ‘Mogra‘ fragrances.
I have spent the last two hours researching about Mogra – which is a white-colored flower. That was the information I started with. All I knew was that Mogra is a sweetly fragrant, white-colored flower. I’ve seen the a flower hundreds of times and taken for granted it’s sweet fragrance. I had no idea what it’s called in English – Mogra is it’s Hindi name. Someone suggested that the Mogra flower is known as Jasmine.
Since I wasn’t sure, a Google Image Search for the flower’s name followed. It turned up very few relevant hits. I thought that the best way to find out whether the two flowers were the same would be to compare their photographs. The photographs turned out to be inconclusive – in terms of helping in the comparison.
[ Another reason why I'm such a huge proponent of the internet. ]
The first resource that came to the rescue was Flickr, where I found many photographs of the flower and one person had given a long description about the flower and it’s family as well. From that article I learned that the Mogra flower is also known as the Arabian Jasmine and it’s scientific name is Jasminum sambac.
The second place I then visited was Wikipedia, where I found a page dedicated to the Arabian Jasmine.
So there.
I’m learning some botany while working on graphic design.
Who said design was just making something look visually appealing?
I love my job.

I was working on a website for a friend – the project is no longer in process – more like I’ve declined to do it anymore because it was taking so long for the client to revert with anything. I had only come up with the website homepage template so far – which in itself was not finalized.

And here is the top right corner of the website template:

This was my first foray into packaging design – customized chocolate wrappers for an Investment Fund Management company – Aquamarine Fund.

The client is based in the US and the wrappers were printed by Spruengli – who also makes the chocolates. The chocolates were meant for Christmas 2006/New Year 2007 for distribution among corporate clients – hence the brief was to keep it simple and professional.

Interesting post on the subject of corporate identity design from the Forty – Business Blog.
Nobody likes the guy at the party who’s trying to impress everyone. Be cool and be yourself. That’s what corporate identity is all about.
A logo isn’t about how to impress everyone else – it’s about your company and who your company is – what it stands for – what you would like to to stand for – make your company’s logo an aspiration-inducing symbol that your employees will look at and go, “This is what I want to be doing. This is what builds passion for me. This is MY company, MY vision.” Of course the basic principles like recognition value for the logo by the customers are important strategic considerations – but at the end of the day, if your company sucks, no matter how ‘awesome’ a logo you have, the logo in itself is not going to BUILD your image.
A customer will much rather do business with a company that caters to his/her requirements and has an ‘ok’ logo instead of working with someone who’s all show and no substance.
